The Monastery of Ely, and the rebuilding of the cathedral

The monastery has seen many changes since its foundation in the 7th century, and in this talk the Cathedral Archaeologist for the past 20 years outlines what is now known about the location and development of the city of Ely, and focuses in on the Octagon, Ely's famous lantern tower, its origin and the changes which have occurred.

Philip Dixon is the archaeologist for the cathedrals of Ely, Lincoln, Southwell, Leicester and Selby Abbey, and formerly had that role at Sheffield Cathedral. He was for ten years a commissioner of the Cathedral Fabric Commission for England. He was Reader and head of archaeology at the University of Nottingham, visiting Professor at the University of Aarhus, and Research Professor at the University of Durham. He was for twenty years General Secretary and President of the Council for British Archaeology, of which he is now honorary Vice President.
