'The Suakin Project'

The Suakin Project is an archaeological and conservation project on the Red Sea coast of Sudan, under the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums. Suakin was the main port of Sudan from 15th to early 20th century, important both for trade and for the Pilgrimage to Mecca. The talk will present a summary of the overall project, including the main results of the archaeological excavations and survey together with outreach aspects.

Laurence Smith is a Research Fellow at the McDonald Institute, Cambridge University and a College Research Associate of Wolfson College, Cambridge. He has studied archaeology at Cambridge and Bradford Universities, doing a PhD on the production and distribution of Medieval period Nubian pottery (under Dr. John Alexander), followed by a project on fine pottery of the Meroitic period in Sudan (c. 300 BC to AD 300). He has worked on two road-line surveys in Sudan, one to the north of Khartoum, and the other across the desert extending north-west of Omdurman. Currently, he is co-field director of the Suakin Project (with Mr. Michael Mallinson), focussing on the archaeological work.
