Exning Cemetery

Abstract: Exning Cemetery
'Exning in Suffolk, according to the Liber Eliensis, is the birthplace of St Aethelthryth, who would become Abbess of Ely. This suggests the presence of a high-status Anglo-Saxon settlement at Exning but until archaeological work was undertaken to the south of Burwell Road in Exning, little physical evidence for this existed. Excavation of this site identified a series of burials demonstrating that a group of wealthy, and therefore presumably influential, people were active in and around Exning in the 7th century.
